Chicago Cultural Center’s “Not a Soft Thing” Shows Multifaceted Views of Mother Artists

Katie Kirk brings together these contradictions in her ceramic piece “An Inauspicious End” (2025), where she molded her pregnant belly at nine months with a silicone mold. The shield-like piece seems to represent both the strength and fragility of motherhood. It is a callback to the title of the show “Not a Soft Thing.”
